Stepping back inside the dark house after the brisk walk in the sun, I felt truly afraid for the first time. The vast emptiness felt like a presence, almost larger than that of the characters from my dream. I almost wanted to shout out, “Is there anyone here?” but stopped myself. What if I got a reply? What if Anthony Stewart did haunt this place? His home where he had lived with his young and beautiful wife, pregnant with what he must have thought was their first baby. Had he been happy here? What had triggered his first suspicions? Was it something Abigail said or did? Did Anthony find her diary?

I pulled off my coat and put it back in the hall closet, walked into the kitchen and made a cup of tea that I took with me up to the bedroom. I paused with my hand on the doorknob but when I finally opened the door, the room looked unusually cheerful, lit by the October sun. I walked over to the bed, found the novel I’d been reading, and curled up under a blanket.

I opened the book to the place where I’d stopped reading, removing the fountain pen—Anthony’s—that I’d used in lieu of a bookmark. I started skimming the text to find my place and then froze.
